Psalm 104
God has wondrously set everything in its place—from oceans to storks to whales to the sun. Praise to God who has made this earth and whose power and care is expressed in every part of the world.

Micah 7: 11-20                            What’s Micah about?
The prophet predicts that God will rescue the people and defeat all who oppress them, and will cast their sins into the sea, because God delights in forgiving and being faithful to the people.

This concludes our readings from the short prophetic books anticipating God’s rescue of the people from destruction by the Assyrians and Babylonians. Early Christians interpreted these passages as anticipating God’s rescue of humanity through the arrival of Jesus.

Matthew 20: 29-34                            What’s Matthew about?
On his way to Jerusalem and his approaching execution, Jesus heals two blind men, who then follow him. They clearly stand in contrast to the disciples who have just been scheming to get the most important places in heaven and are blind to what it means to follow the path of generous love. The implication is that before long the disciples, who are now blind, will be healed, will see what Jesus is really about, and will follow him into the way of true life and costly love.

This week’s collect:

Almighty and everlasting God,
whose will it is to restore all things
in your well-beloved Son, our Lord and King,
grant that the peoples of the earth,
now divided and enslaved by sin,
may be freed and brought together
under his gentle and loving rule;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
