Psalm 68
A song of joy that God drives away evil and cares for the needy just as God rescued God’s people long ago from Egypt and drove out all the other kings so they could settle in the land God had promised. Can we cultivate the expectation that God will triumph over all the selfish international powers of our day?
The violent images part way through are a way of expressing how completely God’s goodness and justice will remove all evil and exploitative powers.
Ecclesiastes 8.14-9.10 What’s Ecclesiastes about?
Good people are badly treated, and evil people are rewarded. Nobody can ever know what is going on and why this is. So enjoy yourself if you can. Nobody can find out what the point of life is, so work hard, and enjoy yourself, because before long you will be dead, and the dead know nothing.
Matthew 15.29-39 What’s Matthew about?
Jesus is in non-Jewish territory and feeds an enormous crowd of non-Jewish people. Seven baskets are left over perhaps a sign that the seven nations that had been driven out so the ancient Israelites could settle are now given full status by God.
This week’s collect:
O God,
you have assured the human family of eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Deliver us from the death of sin
and raise us to new life in him,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
