Psalm 146
Joy in God’s victorious justice for the oppressed, the blind, the strangers and the orphans—that justice for all is built into God’s magnificent creation. Appropriate for a Sunday, which is the anniversary of the resurrection—God’s victory over all evil.

Psalm 147
God’s wondrous creation and God’s commitment to justice are intertwined. Other cultures are not aware of this. What a helpful insight in our day!

Exodus 14.5-22                           What’s Exodus about?
When Pharaoh changes his mind about letting the people go, the people are terrified that Moses has led them into a trap—they have no trust in God’s permanent commitment to them. God then performs the foundational miracle of the entire Hebrew Bible—the threatening sea, reminding us of the chaos at the beginning of creation, is held back so the people can escape from slavery.

Do we anticipate utterly unexpected ways in which God may be acting to rescue us and our world from slavery to destruction? Learning to live in anticipation of such an act will give us life and freedom from the oppression generated by the current rulers of the world.

John 14.1-7                           What’s John about?
John, writing a generation after Jesus’ earthly life, realizes that future disciples, such as we, will need to participate in the life of Jesus even when Jesus is no longer present in his original bodily form. The way of experiencing Jesus is to live in his life of death and resurrection—to do so is to experience God. We begin to look forward to Pentecost and the coming of God’s Spirit.

This week’s collect:

Eternal Giver of life and light,
through the mighty resurrection of your Son,
and the hope of those who doubt,
may we, who have not seen, have faith
and receive the fullness of Christ’s blessing,
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
