Psalm 40
All my life God lifted me up and I rejoiced in God’s care. But now my own sin, and my enemies, have nearly destroyed me. Do not wait any longer, God!

Psalm 54
I am in dire straights. Put everything back to right, God. I praise you, because you have done that.

Ecclesiastes 5.1-7                           What’s Ecclesiastes about?
The writer starts to sound like Proverbs—all will be well if you obey God. But then the writer says that our dreams are quick to vanish and only God can be relied upon.

Matthew 14.22-36                           What’s Matthew about?
Immediately after Jesus’ cousin is executed at a feast in Herod’s palace, Jesus provides a far larger feast which is based on generosity and not violence, and rather than court officials, Jesus feeds 5,000 ordinary people with twelve baskets left over. The evil of the Roman empire is being reversed by the generosity of God’s justice. This process will be make complete when Jesus himself undergoes execution and all are raised in the resurrection with him.

This week’s collect:

Lord God of the nations,
you have revealed your will to all people
and promised us your saving help.
May we hear and do what you command,
that the darkness may be overcome
by the power of your light;
through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever. Amen.
